North Zealand, Hamlet’s Castle
The relatively short distance between Copenhagen and North Zealand means that more of the castles and museums are within easy reach.
We leave Copenhagen and follow the coastline from where we have a view across the sound towards Sweden.
We pass in front of Hvidøre Palace where Empress Dagmar lived in exile after the Russian Revolution. We will also see the old Royal hunting fields with The Hermitage, and later Rungstedlund, the home of Karen Blixen who wrote Out of Africa. Louisiana, the Museum of Modern Art is also on our way up North.
In Elsinore where the distance beween Denmark and Sweden is the shortest lies Kronborg Castle with its towers and spires. We shall hear about the Øresund Toll which allowed the kings to build Northern Europe’s finest Renaissance Palace. Kronborg Castle is also known as Hamlet’s Castle and is the setting for Shakespeare’s play by the same name.
From Elsinore we will drive into the country towards Fredensborg and make a stop by Fredensborg Palace which is a Queen’s summer residence.
We continue our journey to Hillerød where Frederiksborg Castle awaits with its impressive Great Hall and the castle church with the many old coats of arms that will tell us the story of the Order of Dannebrog and the Order of the Elephant.
